Dear HamSphere Operators

Welcome to the Feb 2013 Edition of the HamSphere Newsletter! Lots of stuff so here we go:

New DXHC Awards

HamSphere proudly presents three new North American Awards: Worked 25 US States, Worked All States and Worked 10 Canadian Provinces or Territories. When it comes to State and Province location we rely entirely on Geo IP tracking. It is the IP number that determines the location, but if you find any discrepancies or you know that we have the wrong location, we can always correct this. Please let us know if you want to correct a location of a US/Canadian operator.

There are 56 European countries and we have created three challenging European Awards. Work 40, 45 and 50 European countries.

Click here for more info about the new awards

Unconfirmed Countries/States/Provinces

You can now use our system for Unconfirmed Countries/States/Provinces etc.You will get an instant update of what Countries/States you need to work to get your prestigious awards.

Click here to see what Countries/States you need to work

The system will present ISO codes as well as the International HS Country code. For Canada and USA it will show you the State abreviation and name.

State/Province now listed in cluster

Each DX Cluster on HamSphere now has State and Province information for USA and Canadian operators. This is helpful information when you are working North American stations.

QSO Matching

Some users have asked us about the QSO matching for awards. This is the way it works:

A verified QSO (Contact) requires a sent and received QSL card.
In your log book you will find two squares, S and R which will turn red and green when you have sent a QSL and received a QSL for a QSO.
As you know you will click the grey S to send a card and it will turn red when the card has been sent. The R will then turn green when the other station has sent you a confirming card for that same QSO.

When you look in your logstats page you will find your log book, At the end of each logged row you will find two X like XX when both a QSL has been sent and QSL has been received. The trick is the have XX = Both Sent and Received QSL cards = A verified QSO. Good luck!

Contests

The HamSphere International DX Contest was held Saturday to Sunday 2013-02-23 00:00 to 2013-02-24 23:59.
A total of 10300 QSOs were filed from 475 contestants. Contest results will be displayed in a week on the Contest Forum.

Contest Results

Here are the results from the HamSphere Christmas contest 2012 that was held 26 Dec 2012 between 08:30 and 11.00 UTC.
The results are based on a properly filled out logbook, verified log entry and that power limitation were kept.
Congratulations to Martin 161HS363 who won this contest with the score of 1300. He managed to get 52 QSOs and 24 multipliers

Results: "HamSphere Christmas contest", 26 Dec 2012
1st, 161HS363, POLAND, 1300 points
2nd, LY3BHY, LITHUANIA, 968 points
3rd, CT2EHF, PORTUGAL, 805 points

New Servers

We have invested in new powerful 8 core servers located in Strasbourg, France and St. Louis, Missouri. These servers are more powerful than the old cloud servers in London and Chicago. We also run an 8 core server in Stockholm as well as a 4 core Greenqloud server in Reykjavik, Iceland.

DX Cluster Updates/Changes

We have now implemented a more realistic DX Cluster in the Transceiver. It lists only transmitting stations and the last frequency they were QRV on which is a big advantage when you are QSO-ing. Transmitting stations will always be presented at the top. The cluster makes more sense and it is not so cluttered. If you want to show up in the cluster, just hit the PTT on a specific frequency and you will pop up immediately.

If you bring up the WEB Cluster http://www.hamsphere.com/cluster.php you will find all logged on stations, even stations that do not transmit.

Learning channels

Newcomers to HamSphere will in the future be able to listen to "Learning Channels" which will be automated stations looping on the Ham Bands of HamSphere. These learning station will describe Amateur Radio concepts and operation ethics as well as practical tips and tricks.

Reworked Forum

As some of you may have seen we have reorganized the HamSphere Forum
The forum is now more structurized and we have added a new forum for Contesting. Most of the spread out Manuals have been compiled into the "Manuals" forum.

HamSphere DXHC Top-1000

We have now expanded from Top-200 to Top-1000 operators.
It is wonderful to see so many avid DXers on HamSphere. The list has also been expanded to cover the new European and North American awards.

Android Beta app works well

After many months of testing we are now presenting the latest Android beta version. The reason it is still in beta is that we still have some features to work out. But the app is working great and it can be downloaded from HamSphere Android Beta.

SSTV News

In the last few months we have been experimenting with a number of datamodes on Hamsphere including RTTY, PSK31 and MT63 1000.

Tests with MT63 have been particularly successful with the ability to run very low powers, and operate close to other signals on the band and still achieve 100%. Fast throughput of data is possible and it also works very well across all servers.

Starting frequency for datamodes tends to be around 10120 or 10130, with SSTV sitting on 10140 or 10160. CW mode is also used and a number of stations are keen CW operators. For those whose CW receiving ability is weak FLDIGI will also decode morse code very successfully.

Software: FLDIGI is a popular choice for datamodes, but also MT63 Terminal by IZ8BLY is a good choice. Stations are also using MIXW, and HRD Digital master. MMSSTV is the software of choice for SSTV.

We hope that datamodes activity will increase as more stations gain confidence using it. Help with configuring software and PC settings is available through the facebook group 73 de Mike G0AMO.
