Random disconnects

Hi Kelly & co,

The last couple of days at random times i have been getting disconnected from Hamsphere (as have a few others) with the DX chat message saying "Server is temporarily offline. Please try later!"

Is this a bug? or just a random way the server cycles connections?

Best wishes Glenn 26HS2269

These disconnections are caused by a drop in the communication between the server and the application. This may seem obvious but the causes aren't always so with any of the IP steps between application and the server being at fault.

The most common cause will be that your internet bandwidth is either used up by local connections or by another user on your contended connection. The next would be either your modem or exchange cycling the IP address lease or refreshing due to a high SNR detection. There could be an issue at a net node further down the line, either due to a loss of connection, failure of hardware or high latency.

These are just some of the reasons that you, and others, could be losing the connection to the server.

There are some steps you can take to minimise the risk of losing connection:

1. Turn off any devices or applications that share your IP connection that are not in use or are not high priority.

2. Test your connection using both ISP supplied and third party facilities. This includes speed testers, pings, and route traces. If you find high latency, slow connections, or bottle necks on the ISP's network report it and get it fixed.

3. Try to avoid peak times on connections with a high contention level. While 50:1, 10:1, or even 1:1 are advertised or sold they can be much higher. Most users will have noticed that just after the school kids get home, evenings, and weekends the available bandwidth is greatly reduced.

4. Many ISPs throttle the connection of 'heavy users'. This could be anyone downloading more than 10Gb in a month. The throttling is often carried out during peak times but some ISPs leave it on. If you suspect that this is the case either reduce your downloads or contact your ISP.

If you keep on top of your own connection, and your ISP, it should reduce the number of disconnections and will improve your overall internet experience.
