Has anyone wired a PTT CB style mike to 3.5mm jack? any links or ideas about this?

Bill.

Hey Bill
If you mean using a CB mic for operating Hamsphere, I think you would have a major impedance problem wiring the mic to your computer.
If you can do it, let us know.

Hi, Bill,

You shouldn' t have any trouble wiring the microphone to a 3.5 mm (1/8") tip-sleeve plug, or if your sound card supports stereo input, a tip-ring-sleeve stereo plug, but the PTT won't work.

The sound card input has no mechanism to detect the PTT switch closure, and Hamsphere, at this time, supports no external connection of any sort of PTT switch. I don't think that you can even cobble something together.

Good luck!

Very 73,

Tom

Hello again Bill
Here's a page that may interest you.
I wired a few mic's over the years and never tried to get one to work through a sound card.... If the mic impedance is lower than 600 Ohms you'll have a problem and as Tom said, getting the PTT to work will be impossible.
Mics are so cheap these days, it may not be worth the effort to try.... hi hi
Good luck

Bill,

I am using an Astatic teardrop mike on Hamsphere with the PTT swithing the TX/RX as on a proper radio, Hi. I have used up all of my trial time sorting this out but the audio reports I have had are good.

The impedance problems mentioned in various places do not affect this type of mike because it contains a pre-amp with acts an impedance buffer. All power mikes tend to have this characteristic.

The microphone output is wired straight to a 3.5mm jack plugged into the mic input of my sound card. The volume and tone control on the mike allow you to set things up really nicely through the record/playback channel on the 50MHz band.

The connection of the PTT to operate the Hamsphere TX is briefly mentioned in my message titled "microphone connection".

Hello Bernie
I'm trying to understand this.... In your previous post you have a regular CB Mic hooked up. You have the cord of the mic connected to a 3.5mmjack which is plugged into your sound card. After bringing up Hamsphere, you click the PTT so the green light comes on (ready indicator) then, when you key the "hand mic" Hamsphere goes into the TX mode....? Is that right?

Getting by the impedance issue isn't surprising but I am wondering how your sound card activates the Hamsphere TX function.... very, very interesting.
We know what kind of mic you have.... What type of sound card are you using?
Lastly, can you post a diagram or schematic showing us how you connected it?
Many thanks.... I didn't think it could be done through a sond card with a CB mic! Great work my friend.

Hi guys....all excellent stuff, very interesting....I am at mo' playing with a PS/2 mouse wiring, (have daft idea of mounting dynamic mike piece inside mouse housing & using right click to PTT?!!!) ha ha dream on eh????? will watch this thread for more ideas.....

Maybe this is something that could be developed by one of our techie compatriots..

What would be involved in replacing the content of a handheld or desktop mic with USB mic parts and also wiring the PTT to activate in the same way as the mouse button to activate F1?

Jerry,

I quickly put together a site to show this info a little better. Its a bit sketchy but I will work on it a bit more later. A few photos and scanned hand drawn diagrams should do the job.

The site link is http://sites.google.com/site/hamspheremic

Let me know if you can follow the drawing.

Hello Bernie
Well..... I can't seem to find the drawing....? Just a photo of you (I suppose) at a desk. Click on the "mic schematic" link and nothing?

Take a look.... let me know when you get it linked.
Thank you

Got it Bernie! So...... You...... Once Hamsphere is in the "ready mode", green light on, you key the mic and it transmits? Do you do anything via the mouse or just leave it?

Jerry,

It works exactly the same way as using the F1 key on the keyboard. I make sure the cursor is clicked over the Hamsphere TX window to make sure it is the active window and then just use the radio as you would a real radio.

You can try this out yourself without the mike, by configuring your Microsoft mouse right click to F1 and clicking it whilst the cursor is over the Hamsphere window. Some mice other than Microsoft might work but I know a Dell mouse wont configure.

It works exactly the same way as using the F1 key on the keyboard.

By the way, the site has been tidied up a bit.http://sites.google.com/site/hamspheremic

An alternative would be for some to workout which pins are used for a mouse button and for a usb mic, draw a working schematic, and write a driver for the combined device - bearing in mind that it would have to be a windows, Mac, and linux driver.. ( Possibly using an FT232RL board)

This hardware could them be inserted into handheld or desktop mics.

With many modern keyboards having USB hubs built in the cable wouldn't need to be too long either.

{ I know what to do but not how to do it :( }

Has anyone tried using a mic plugged into a Rigblaster USB yet? If it can start/stop applications it should be able to activate software PTT.

Here is one possible solution I have found Speechware.

It's not cheap but does have programmable buttons.
