Hangs up on "Logging in"
2010-01-27 15:22
We are excited about our school Ham Club having Hamsphere as a tool for training the students and giving them some practical experience, but we are running into problems getting the software to work.

We are behind a school district firewall and so we applied for and received approval to use port 8010 and to access hamsphere.com. We downloaded the software and installed it on the club computer along with current Java. When we start the program by clicking on the icon, we get the GUI. So far so good.

When we enter our club callsign (KJ4IPA) and passcode, we get the "Welcome message, Client version 2.0.19, Skin version standard 2.0.7, Using playback device 0, Using recording device 0, Logging in KJ4IPA." The "Please Log In" sign is lit on the transceiver. And that's where it stays until we exit the program--we never connect. We've let it run for 30 minutes without success and without any error message.

District swears that they have cleared the way, in fact they are anxious for this to succeed because we have several other Ham Clubs that would like to follow our lead. We all use HP laptops and desktops.

What can we do to try to clear the problem. Should we use Ping Plotter?

Your advice and assistance will be greatly appreciated by our future hams.

Thank you, Mike O'Byrne (KJ4QYN) for George Taylor and the Little Mill Ham Club (KJ4IPA)

Hello Mike
I'm very happy to see Hamsphere being used in your classroom! It is a terrific tool.
Do you get this far when you log in?
=======================

It appears you may not even be connected unless it says "Credentials Received" It does sound like a firewall issue.... Stand by just a few and I'll get you some help.

Hi Jerry,

We get as far as the "logging in kj4ipa" and that is where it stops - just before credentials received.

Hello.

Sorry for the delay. Been caught up in some private matters regarding my house in Sweden.

Jerry seems to have narrowed it down well. It really sounds like a firewall issue.
The client should send a login phrase and the systems should return the credentials.
The system uses TCP port 8010 outbound. Make sure that is open and not blocked in any firewall.
Also the NAT must be enabled in your home router.

If you get "Using playback device" and "Using recording device" without any errors, your sound cards is good to go! I can only think of a network thing here. Seems like a firewall isuue.

Regards
Kelly

Hello
First thing..... make sure you have downloaded the latest version of Java.
Download it HERE The system uses TCP port 8010 outbound. Make sure that is open and not blocked in any firewall.
Also the NAT must be enabled in your home router.
If that doesn't work... Please let me know.
