TOO LOUD!!!!!

Some users are still over modulating in the system.
For some it is due to the Hamsphere mic level set so that it is just below the kick level and the power output set to maximum. For some it is due to the computer audio settings being too high. As was written into the manual:
No. 7 means use the least power you need not the maximum.. If you audio is too load or your power setting is too high you will cause problems across the band and can wipe out other users completely. Please make good use of the test frequency - 50.121345 - to setup your equipment. This frequency has an automatic record & playback facility that will let you hear your own transmissions so will know how it sounds. Andy KF6PVT/MM0BQV/Broadcaster Hamsphere Forum Moderator |

Another cause has come to light today.
Some microphones, especially the cheaper ones, have very low impedence and users are finding it difficult to turn down the volume, one turned both the PC sound and the HS gain gain down to 1 as was still too load. If you cannot turn it down - try another mic.. Andy KF6PVT/MM0BQV/Broadcaster Hamsphere Forum Moderator |

I would recommend this way how to set microphone level correctly -
1. set freq. 50.12345MHz 2. press PTT 3. try to sing one constant tone to microphone - the S-meter reacts very slowly (speaking makes only peaks, which are not measured correctly), so you need to sing at least 5 seconds 4. set microphone input for the best results (you should get value between +40dB and +60dB ) 5. monitor your OS volume somehow (Audacity should do the work) and try to stay under 0dB Low value --- 7 - 20dB Optimal value --- 40dB - 55dB Overload --- 60dB and more Notice that knob MIC LEVEL influences output volume to server, it is not microphone preamplifier - to get distortion-free sound, you need to set microphone volume in your OS to 60% or less (depends on soundcard). If you don't want to be kicked from the server, keep this knob below value 6. Equalization: This works best for me Low-cut filter 75Hz 80Hz -3dB 2.5kHz +10dB 12kHz +15dB Power settings: Remember: Less is often more! low power (QRP) - sufficent for most situations: value 0-2 mid power - for intercontinental QSO: value 3-6 high power - set ONLY if you can't make the QSO with lower values: value 7-10 extra high power (2,5kW) - not recommended, only for intergalactic QSOs B) : value 11 |

Nicely put 179HS107..(tu)
Bigger isn't always bigger with audio. Just because it goes to 11 doesn't mean you have to go all the way all the time. ;) Andy KF6PVT/MM0BQV/Broadcaster Hamsphere Forum Moderator |
