Hello 26HS340.

The /devices command in the chat will list all available audio devices in your system.
Please do this and get back to us with that list. It looks like you do not have a capture device such as a microphone etc.

Just start the radio. Do not try to login.
In the chat field type:

/devices

and hit enter

You will get a list of audio devices.

OK?

Thank you.

The list tells us that you do not have a sound input device or the device you have is not compatible with HamSphere. HamSphere will not work without a capture device (recording).

Something tells me that the audio input driver is not installed properly.
If you do Start->Settings->Audio control, what does it tell you? Does the audio control tell you that you have an input device?

You may install a USD microphone to resolve this. Is this a laptop?

Ok, well, it seems that your computer has not yet configured the audio input driver.
Do you have a microphone connected to the input plug? Such as a headset etc.

You need to get the input device working or you won't be able to start HamSphere.
A last resport could be to get a USB microphone. They are cheap and they work well with HamSphere.

Hello Scott,
I'm not quite sure what you mean about "Factory reset"..... Please tell me what happens when you try to download Hamsphere.
Be a little more specific and I'm sure we can get you up and running.

Hello Robert,
Sorry for the name mistake earlier.... I know Kelly had a very late night which could be why I haven't heard anything yet.... However, I just remembered a situation similar to yours.
If you can, here's something to try:
After you download the program move it to a CD (I hope yo have a blank CD around) Then try to install and run the program via the CD.
A fellow in Scotland had the exact same problem as you have and thats how he resolved it. Why it worked is still a mystery to me.
Try that, if you can and in the meantime, I'll give Kelly another shout to see if we can figure this out.

trouble starting HamSphere on MAC

Hi!

I'm using a MacBook (Intel), with Mac OS X 10.4.11. with Java version 1.5.0_19.
Starting HamSphere 2.0.19 gives me the familiar error message: "It seems like the selected audio capture (Recording) device is not working properly."

On the Mac in "System Preferences" --> "Sound" --> "Input" I see the following input devices:
- Internal microphone, built-in
- Line In, Audio line-in port
- Logitech USB Headset, USB
All three inputs work properly with other applications (non-Java, I could not test with any Java app)

In HamSphere the /devices command lists the following:
Available playback devices:
0:Java Sound Audio Engine

Available recording devices:
0:Mac OS X,CoreAudio,Audio hardware
1:
2:

Current playback device: 0
Current recording device: 0

HamSphere accepts the /play 0 command and confirms that "Playback device 0 set"
It does not respond to any /record X command (X=0, 1, 2), hence I cannot log in.

-- Edit: I did some debugging, the result is this: ---

In the chat/dx cluster window HamSphere gives the following welcome message:
Welcome to HamSphere
Client ver: 2.0.19
Skin ver: Standard 2.0.7
Debug:TX Audio error:No line matching interface TargetDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 8000.0 Hz, 16 bit, mono, 2 bytes/frame, little-endian is supported.

Issuing the /record X command throws the following Java exception (logging in throws the same exception with a similar call trace)
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Line unsupported: interface TargetDataLine supporting format PCM_SIGNED 8000.0 Hz, 16 bit, mono, 2 bytes/frame, little-endian

at com.lindman.hamsphere.HamSphere.run(HamSphere.java:72)

Please help me to proceed further.

thanks,
Zsolt

Hello Zsolt
WOW... That's a lot of debugging you did there. I know zero regarding a Mac. I will forward this post to Kelly in hopes that he can help you. In the interim, maybe a "Mac" person will stop by and see this post.
Stand by.

Hello Zsolt

Indeed you found the problem. Your java sound driver does not support 8000 Hz sampling rate.
This is usually very rare, but happens on certain java ports.

This is a well documented java Mac problem and we can start finding info about this on this page omn Suns forum:

http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5405966

They say that MAC Javasoud is buggy and that it is only supports 44.1 kHz sampling rate at this stage (And their thread is from Sep 2009). You will need to find a Java driver that supports 8 kHz sampling rate on that hardware. Look at the last message in that thread saying "By the way, the code with sampling rate=8KHz works just fine on Intel Macs with jre 1.5.0_19 32-bit. Recording and playback both work flawlessly. "

What java version are you using?

You can continue searching for this problem on the Internet as you now know why it is giving you this fault. It is not really a HamSphere oriented problem.

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

thank you for your prompt reply, and Jerry for forwarding my post.

java -version gives me this:
java version "1.5.0_19"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_19-b02-306)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_19-138, mixed mode, sharing)

Apparently this is the same version that supposed to work. I found a JavaSoundDemo java app in which I was able to reproduce the problem. I'll do some research and post the results here.

Zsolt

No success. Reading Apple mailing list archives and various forums just confirmed that the only supported sampling rate is 44.1kHz. I would still appreciate if someone using HamSphere on Mac posted the actual working config (HW, OS, Java version, any tweaks done)

As far as my HamSphere trial is concerned, problem solved: I borrowed my wife's laptop (Vista) and HamSphere worked just fine, I even had my first QSO. Kudos to Kelly 5B4AIT for such an excellent job.

Zsolt

I think the program doesn't work for Mac period. The latest version of java for the Mac doesn't support the program.
I think I have given up. I am happy with Echo Mac and Cocozmodem for Mac.

Dear Joe.

I have just been informed that Mac OS 10.5.8 and Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_05 works well with HamSphere. Does this tell you anything?

Type /devices into the chat widow.

This will give you a list similar to:

Available playback devices:
0 Primary Sound Driver
1 Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
2 Java Sound Audio Engine

Available recording devices:

Current playback device 0
Current recording device 0

It you cams audio device is listed it should work..

Trying and getting nowhere - Hamsphere works nice on my Linux box (4xXeon @3.2 GHz) this amchine is used for film production in addition to HPUX and SUN boxes.
For WEB browsing and e_mail and other useless work I use iMAC - so I loaded Hamsphere and .... simply just not working, os is Tiger 10.4.11 ( Leopard has to many problems to be usefull yet). As far as I cen see there no solution to this - is yet another APPLE conspiracy ??? in addition to failing keyboards in 2years, hard disk failures in 3 years, when removed from iMac and tucked on to Linux/UNIX box the drive is perfectly OK.
Is APPLE following the steps of crap Microsoft ???

Hi Kris,

Please refer to the update on Mac and Hamsphere.

There have been issues with Mac OS in the past but very few since 10.5 and the last few Java updates.

Your message does state that you are on 10.4.11 therefore I suggest that you update both your OS and Java installations.

Also, please do not use the Hamsphere forums to rant about or flame other products.

My appologies for negative or not nice comments.
In my life I used to do UNIX admin in large corporations with thousands of MS-Windows machines connected to largest HP servres ever build and SUN huge servers. I always had my IBM ThinkPad with Solaris on it otherwise I could not do any work.
APPLE market is high school and always was. My grand daughters (7 & 4 yrs) have the newest APPLE gizmos as soon as thy are available, in their home the entertainment system is based on 27" iMac, MacMini as multimedia server + AppleAir, MAcBookPro, and MAcBook the whole shubank is on WIFi, ah forgot iPhones & iTouchs. I called their place "APPLE mad house". My personal system is "UNIX/Linux mad house " network of 5 various very fast UNIX/Linux boxes and iMac as fancy X-terminal.

Lets talk about ham radio, forget the rest. I was thinking actually to look at Java on iMAC. Shortage of time is my problem and I hardly turn on my old TR7. Years ago I designed digital HF reciver, build the prototype, tested it and hardly could believe the performance of it - never ever had so image free reception even on RACAL, THOMSON, TELEFUBKEN +++ others mil-spec radios. When I discovered Hamsphere ... great I can listen to HF while working with computers, have no TV and Deutche Welle from the net is my only source of World news.
I am a bit sceptical right now to jump on Leopard - even after latest update has stability issues, hm .... may be JAVA run time is fixed but I think wait a bit until all probs are ironed. In my opinion (and others) the mach kernel does not meet expectations, and very few people actually do any work on it.
Hamsphere is very interesting concept, some people called it virtual radio .... well I am not so sure about virtuality of it. There is real hardware with antennae that shares the IF bandwith with many users connected to it. Just happened via internet. Years ago I was in charge of development of HF radio system - we had four SSB/CW/TTY channels simultaniously on modified RACAL receiver - it was actually DSB where lower and upper sidebands were carrying 2 SSB channels each with different modulation mode. So Hamsphere is simliar but implemented in software. 20+ years ago we did not have CPUs that could do this kind of math (well - unless zilion $ super compuetr).
For time being I use Hamsphere now and than on which ever UNIX box to listen on HF as Sun's activity improves, and I may do some further investigation on to iMac with OSX 10.4 ... is it worth it ????.
I should try on iBook G4 it is different CPU ..... I wonder .... it would be interesting. Wll post results.

Long post .... sorry, rag chuwing .... best 73! Kris
