December 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the Christmas edition of the HamSphere Newsletter 2020.
We have a lot of good stuff coming your way so here we go. And stay safe everyone!!!

Latest from 40m Help Group on HamSphere

I'm Robert M0RCK and I run the Hamsphere 40m Early Morning Help Group on the frequency of 07.050.00 which is to help old and new stations to familiarise themselves with the system, to teach them the proper radio etiquette and how to use callsigns and Q codes professionally. I teach them how to use the HELP button so they can find the Manual, Code of Conduct, Band Plans, etc. I help them with technical information and also guide them to the Test frequency to check their audio and power to avoid over-deviation or splatter. I teach them how to use the HS3/HS4 Mobile and the HS3/HS4 PC, and any other general information about the HamSphere programme. I try to guide them on their way forward to gaining their amateur radio licence.

I'm also there to help amateur radio users to refresh their memories about operating procedures!! I give information about how to pay for subscriptions, how to create and send QSL cards on the HS system, and any other queries that operators may have. I teach them how to operate in a responsible and respectful manner and to respect other operators.

I operate on HS4 2m on frequency 145.5000 for operators guidance, information and queries about the system. I also give guidance through the HF operation, where to get modules, how to purchase them and how to use them.

Advice for friends who want to enjoy CW using the software, FLDiGi, the following actions are necessary. When transmitting in USB mode, many stations operating in CW mode cannot demodulate your CW signal. In LSB mode, demodulation is possible, but the system tends to get too saturated due to excessive input (in USB too) If you use the CW mode, this saturation does not occur in the specified output automatically. (Posts to the cluster of DX monitors are displayed as CW) In the CW mode and if CW Keyer or CW Encoder plug-in is used, the output from FLdigi will not work. When using external software such as FLdigi, you have to disable these plug-ins by the editor.
Settings for HS4 CW operation using FLdigi 1. When using FLdigi, Both CW plugins have to be disabled by the editor then, Mode SW_LSCLY. 2. CW-Encoder is very good (when not using FLdigi) CW-Keyer is difficult to use due to time lag/delay.
You will need a virtual cable or mixer like VoiceMeter between the Transceiver and FLdigi.

Awards on HamSphere 4.0

Alexander Larionov RA9CUH has been a member of HamSphere since Sept 2014. Alex has made over 90000 QSOs on HamSphere 4.0 and he just won the 300 Country award. We managed to get an interview with Alexander and he says:

I began to study Amateur Radio since my school years. I had to do everything myself such as soldering, drilling and think over the layout (the market for transmitting radio equipment was closed in the Soviet Union).
In 1980 I received a 3rd class license and found myself in the Amateur Radio vastness. Then I completed 2nd class and three years later I received 1st class. I had to constantly improve my knowledge in the field of electronics and radio wave propagation. My hobby mates have always helped me to install my antennas. The radio amateurs from the former Soviet Union were the most technically skilled: Engineer and radio amateur rolled into one. My hobby directly influenced the choice of profession and all my work was related to radio. Work experience in competitions came at the club, collective radio stations, where the experience and skill of working on the air were adopted.

And the biggest experience is learning to listen a lot and speak less. The photo shows the equipment made at home by me personally. In September 2014 I accidentally found HamSphere and I tested version 3 and then switched to version 4. Time and high-speed Internet does its job and over time, real radio will become a thing of the past (my opinion that it is the future of radio simulation). The advantage of virtual radio is that the elements do not affect the integrity of the antennas, fast switching of antennas and band changes, quick receipt of cards ... and much more everyone is free to choose for ourselves. 73 de RA9CUH!!!

Amateur Radio station 9A3ZAN

Žan Novosel 9A3ZAN is a licensed Ham Radio operator from Croatia. Žan operates HamSphere 4.0 and on the right you can see his setup. Žan does live streaming sessions on Facebook where he show his operation on the HamSphere 4.0 group on Facebook. We think this is an excellent way of showing the spirit of Ham Radio and how to operate an Amateur Radio station. Here is a link to his latest streaming video:
https://www.facebook.com/564817833/videos/10158972004682834/

You might need to be a member of the HamSphere 4.0 Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hamsphere4.0 before you can watch the video.

Žan (Jean) lives in the northern part of Croatia, city Čakovec. He was born 1988 and licensed 2019.

Čakovec is the economic, administrative and cultural center of Medimurje County. The city is located at the crossroads of international traffic routes connected with Hungary (the crossing at Goričan is 22 km away) and Slovenia (The crossing at Mursko Središće is 15 km away and Trnovec is 12 km from the city). The Croatian capital, Zagreb, is 90 kilometers south of the city.

Amateur Radio station 9HS4755 / VE3OHS

In October of 2016 I started this incredible journey with HamSphere - like every new operator to the platform if excited and wide eyed to make my first contact. My first DX Contact was with 19HS756 - Steffan from that first contact to present day I have 8798 Verified QSOs and 245 countries. With some great help with many mentors and friends on the HS Platform. I must thank Tim (Uncle Tim) VA7FT, Rob 2HS6874, Dan NA1NA and Dave KS1K - for their encouragement and guidance throughout the time on the HamSphere Platform. But most of all I must thank Kelly and his great team for this wonderful piece of software that we all so very much enjoy.

Today this all came together when I passed my Canadian Amateur Radio exam and was issued the call sign VE3OHS. I asked for this specific call (and it was available) for VE3- On HamSphere. It was the time spent working on HS3 and HS4 that prompted me to study and attain my license. Thank you all who have made this journey with me. de 9HS4755 / VE3OHS.

JOTA / JOTI on HamSphere 16 to 18 Oct 2020

Gerhard ZS6CRS used HamSphere for the yearly JOTA/JOTI which is held over the entire world. JOTA/JOTI means Jamboree On The Air or Jamboree On The Internet. We received an email from Gerhard and he says:

Dear HamSphere,

I would like to thank you for allowing me to use a temporary HamSphere call sign for the above event - CQ HOU KOERS is the Afrikaans equivalent of JOTA for an Afrikaans youth movement that is already 90 years old, very similar to the Scouts and Guides. The event was held at various centers throughout the country as well as Namibia.

In our group we had 24 children. The kids completed the theory for their radio procedure badge (based on amateur radio requirements as per the South African Radio League) on the 16th of October and for fun we included some SSTV and satellite communication as well. On the 17th, they had to set up the radio station (again as per die HF assessment requirement from the SARL).

We worked 2m, 40 m and off course, HamSphere 3 - 12 countries were contacted with the latter. 4 of the kids are now on a trial basis on HS3.

Our event was a great success and HamSphere did play a major role in the success.

I am attaching some photographs from the event. I am the the one in the light blue shirt.

Regards

73

Gerhard de ZS6CRS

North America Rag Chew Net

The HamSphere North American Rag Chew Net continues to meet twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday at 01:00 UTC check in is on 40 M at 07.030 and the Round Table or Discussion portion is on 70CM at 434.5 MHz repeater.
Our Net Control for the Wednesday session is 9HS4754 and for the Saturday session it is month on and month off for VA7FT – Tim and KI7WZB – Jim and with yoman work by 2HS1189 Rik looking after the Net Logger.
Over the summer period March to November we were meeting on 70CM only and as of 4th of November this year weare back to the 40M check in and then move to 70CM for the discussion portion.
We are averaging 16 to 18 HamSphere Operator check in per session and the discussion can go from a trivai question to a highly technical question about Amateur Radio or HamSphere 3 and 4 in particular.
After each net the Net Controller, for the evening writes up a report of the evenings net and this can be found on the North America 40 Meter Rag Chew Net Facebook page, be sure to check it out.
We encourage new users to join us, and bring your questions as we say in the preamble, “we were all novices when we started” so no question will be rejected and if a question is asked that we do not have the answer for, we will find the answer for the individual asking the question.
So, do join us on the North American 40 Meter Rag Chew Net, we welcome all HamSphere operators on Wednesday and Saturdays at 01:00 UTC only time that will change if it conflicts with a contest.

The HamSphere Late Night DX Gang

The HamSphere Late Night DX Gang has been going through some changes and growing pains. The vision that our friend and mentor Georg Barbary ON8AIR had when starting this group was to bring together HamSphere operators from around the world who enjoyed and loved working DX stations.
Currently the newly assembled Board of Directors under the leadership of Lew Chapman, VK5FSDX has had several ZOOM meetings trying to organize and make plans for the future of the LNDX Gang.
First order of business was to modify and update the Statues or the constitution of the LNDX Gang. We have two members looking after the membership role and issuing membership numbers, membership cards and the complementary QSL Cards.
One request that the group has made to the operators on HamSphere is that no one, no individual uses the HamSphere Late Night DX logo as a personal avatar – we would though encourage you to use an un-modified version of the log on all of your cards if you are a member of the LNDX gang.
To become a member you are required to have the 50 Country award and you send a copy of that, along with your photo and details of your call sign, email addy, and home QTH to the membership chair Franck 14HS4015 and he will start the process to give you your membership number and membership cards. The Application form (Fillable PDF) can be found in the FILES section of the LNDX Facebook pate. Email address to send the application form to is at the bottom of the form.
Your LNDX Management team is working to keep the LNDX Gang alive and working. Good Luck and Happy DXing.

India DX Net
India DX Net (a.k.a IDX Net or IDXN) has turned nine this September. It has been eight wonderful years of presence on HamSphere with our dedicated service to the community. We are primarily a discussion net with a global reach. Not only is the IDX Net regarded as a source of authentic information pertaining to HamSphere, it also regularly dwells into topics related to HF Radio Propagation, Antennas, Operating practices, Ethics, HF Transceivers, Station equipment setup and various other matters related to Ham Radio. Our strength stems from the vast pool of knowledge-base and collective wisdom of participating operators.

Although the topics discussed on IDX Net are more relevant to HF radio and HamSphere 4.0, we have consciously chosen to run our net mostly on HamSphere 3.0 and occasionally on HamSphere 4.0. This is a deliberate decision since we believe that new operators prefer to start on HS3 to get a better understanding of HF radio before venturing into HamSphere 4.0. Hence we consider it to be our obligation to the HamSphere community to maintain our presence on HS3.

However, as we mentioned, IDX Net also runs occasional sessions on HamSphere 4.0. The most recent one was on 06-Nov-2020 on the 17m band of HS4. Although the intent was to run this session for one hour, we were overwhelmed by the response of operators who checked in from all over the world. Eventually, we ended up with a two hour session. We had operators from USA, Canada, Europe, UK, Asia, New Zealand, etc who joined in and maintained their presence over the entire duration. We had demonstrated that even under low solar activity (Low SSN) conditions, it is possible to establish and maintain long-range DX contacts on HF, if a proper frequency band and time of operation is chosen. We will continue to have more such HS4 sessions in the coming weeks and months... Stay tuned!

To further bridge the information gap and to assist operators to leverage the fascinating art and science of HF propagation, antenna selection, and usage; IDX Net runs a special Facebook group which is dedicated to topics that are important.

Those who have not joined "HamSphere IDX Net - HF Radio" Facebook group so far and wish to do so may click on the following group URL to join..

https://www.facebook.com/groups/HamSphere.IDXnet.HF.radio/

IDX Net also offers a very special official HamSphere award. This award is one of its kind with the unique requirement of consistant participation on both the HS3 and HS4 platform. The "HamSphere IDX Net Dual platform Award" is not a regular run-of-the-mill award, and it is crtainly not meant for the faint-hearted. Checkout the details on the HamSphere website awards page and then decide if you have the grit and the mettle to go for it.

IDX Net is a world-wide net. All operators from anywhere in the world are welcome to join us. Please check our operating time and frequency below. Come and join us regularly for on-air live discussions.

India DX Net operating schedule...

Frequency: 28.455 MHz (10m band)
Net Time: 12:00 UTC onwards on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Platform: HamSphere 3.0 (with occasional sessions on HamSphere 4.0)

Net Control Operator: VU2NSB (Basu)

HamSphere 80 meter award net

By Larry Roop, N8RGO

The HamSphere 80 meter award net meets 1 time during the week on 3.750 at 0100 UTC Mondays. The primary goal of the net is to bring radio operators and states together to achieve their 80 meter award.

We encourage all states to come into the net and participate, the more states we have into our net the easier it will be for new members and even some older members to achieve their 80 meter award quicker. Technically we are a contact net where you exchange signal reports and then exchange QSL Cards for the contact to count on a one on one bases. If our list of checkins in the net are around 15 or less we do have some time that we can spare for general rag-chew, but again it just depends on the amount of checkins. Durning the Spring and Summer months like we are in now attendance is down and we do not get near the states that we may get during the Fall and Winter months. We maintain a fairly regular group of people and that is fine but as stated we would love to have new members and especially new states check in.

To our DX friends please be aware that conditions are much harder during this time of the year and it is much harder for many stateside stations to reach you. We can only do our best with the antennas that we have and the conditions we have to work with at the time of the net. We know that you guys want to acheive your 80 meter award just as bad as many of us do over here and if we can make that happen we will, patience is the key. If it does not happen during the net maybe something can be worked out for a contact at a later time or date. Please don't hesitate to get a hold of me on facebook and let me know certain states you would like to get a hold of if I know a person in that state I can try and make contact with that person and set something up.

Previously on the net
Tonight's HamSphere 80 meter award net 11/16/2020 was started at 01:00 UTC on frequency 3.750, the following 5 stations checked in. 2HS1189/IN, 2HS8210/NY, WW6DX/CA, 2HS7363/TN, and N8RGO/OH as your Net Control Operator.
Tonight's net consisted of 5 checkins and we thank all who did check in. Not much going on this evening, fairly short net lasted about half an hour, just before I closed the radio down from sending out my QSL cards I noticed N4DPC was in there so we will mention him now.
Remember we have a FB group labeled the HamSphere 80 meter award net, please check it out and if you are not a member send us a request to join and we will get you approved as quickly as we can.
The net was closed at 0130 UTC. Always keep in mind to check into as many nets as you can. As always have a great rest of the week ahead. 73 N8RGO.

Digimodes on HamSphere

Digimodes have become more active on HamSphere.

Here are some comments from Branko YU4DX:

We see 8-FSK modulation, aka FT8 as well as other slower digital modes JT9, JT65. Proper software defining of possible codecs needed or else inside HS4 in order to integrate WSJT and use of its digital protocols onto HS4 platform. I guess if allowed and involved likewise, at small band portions, or at suggested frequencies in range of up to 5 Khz, or even less, I believe and hope it would revolve and evolve 2-ways during and while poor band condx but of course could encourage and populate more of a lower band's activities (160, 80, 60, even 40 and 30m). Occupies small bandwidth of 47Hz, TX duration doesn't exceed 14 sec, multi-times faster completion of a QSO, decoding thresholds approx -20dB and even more.. Extra advantage - OPs will get in familiar with WSJT QSO protocols; furthermore, Weak Signal Communication decoding sys will be a must to if/when VHF/UHF will be applied onto HS4.. Personally, I could not imagine fully operational HAM OP without K1JT's WSJT softW, in a sense of its necessity.. GL!
Hope its implementation and use is HS4 programmable .. 73s Branco

From Michael Recagno ZB3M we get this info: PSK31 an SSTV which are the two most used, I dont think FT8 is gonna work on HS4 due to latency times on some countries. :( but maybe a Hamsphere version of WSJT-X could work. :)

As for tips please keep mic levels at minimum, The volume slider plugin is very useful as it indicates the volume level in digit, this in combination with the S-Meter plus helps a lot in maintaining good audio levels. Also 5 or 10w is more than enough lol

Some Digimode tips By Steve, KC3AZT:

I have an article on the HamSphere Datamodes page on Facebook where I have made graphic diagrams to help you understand a bit more on how to wire your sound cards when working Digimodes. I am also describing a typical manual PTT and a VOX set-up operational type layout. Please follow this link!

When it comes to Easy Beginners Digital Programs, let’s start with what I feel is the easiest simplest DiGi program. I personally recommend FliDigi. The current version is 4.0.8 as of today from the best of my knowledge. When you go to install FliDigi it will ask you if you like to install Flac, say no or simply uncheck the box during installation, only if you plan to use FliDigi for HamSphere. Click on the Help found top side menu and look for Beginner’s Guide. It’s here that you can read up and get yourself familiarized with all the popular modes of digital communications. If you prefer you can also join the Digimodes On HamSphere Facebook group where you will most likely get a correct answer to that detailed question you may have. You can always find me via the HamSphere 4.0 platform floating around as well if you like more detailed explanations on any subject matter related to how to. 73 and look forward hearing from you soon on 30 meters! Steve, KC3AZT.
