Can't Hear anything on HAMSPHERE 4.0
2015-04-22 15:31
I have been on HAMSPHERE 3 for several weeks, and decided to join the "BIG BOYS" and downloaded HAMSPHERE 4. Starting with the basic IDC antenna, I can't hear anything, except a few week signals. I "BOUGHT" a GR5V all band, thinking that would help. Well of course I had to buy an "Antenna Selector". Same thing...can't hear anything.

I have been a HAM for almost 30 years. Even with a WIRE ANTENNA I hear signals or at least broadcast signals. I understand that I cannot work DX, but at least I would be able to hear some contacts. I am sure the next answer would be "YOU HAVE TO BUY A BEAM". That of course also means I have to "BUY" an Antenna Rotor. Before I do that (and sink more dollars into this), I want to make sure that I have a realistic expectations of having some contacts.

I have had exactly ONE (1) QSO on HAMSPHERE 4 - It was with a nice gentleman who after talking to me from 20 meters, talked to me on 2 Meters. I was able to talk to him and he gave me a lesson on SKINS, Accessories and Antenna. He had clearly spend several hundreds of EUROS on his accessories. Since then, I have not received ONE contact, after spending time sending CQ messages.

Is this typical of everyones experience on HS4? I would expect a few contacts (maybe not distant, but at least local). I have tried this on both days and nights. Since there is no way I can monitor my signal, I don't know if I am actually sending out anything. I know my MIC and SPEAKERS are working, and I see Activity in the Monitor. This is quite frustrating.

All I am looking for is some confirmation that this is what everyone else is seeing. It is hard to believe, if this is everyones experience, that they then go ahead and spend Hundreds or Thousands of Euros on this. Please tell me that I am wrong. Although there is not a lot of activity on HS3, at least I know it works, and have had at least 10 contacts with QSL Cards. That proves my equipment is working properly.

I love Ham Radio, but don't have to ability to put up antennas. I was hoping for a real-world experience with HS4. Please let me know your thoughts. IS this more popular with the Europeans? and that is why I am not hearing local (US) contacts? I would hope not. I am willing to invest in more antennas and equipment, if I had an expectation of success.

Please let me know.

Hi Eric,

that's not normal. Also with the IDC it's possible to make QSOs.
Maybe you had some "bad propagation" days? I know that also some US-Stations have local contacts there.
And I'm often talking with US-Stations on HS 4.
Keep trying it. :-)

Hamsphere 3 works fine for me but I receive nothing on Hamsphere 4. I have added a antenna and antenna selector and no improvement.

Did this ever get resolved? I'm having the same problem on version 4.010. The Transceiver starts fine and I hear the noise floor/static but do not receive any stations on any band.
i can only hear the odd 2 meter station on 4.0 nothing else, been this way for months.

however if i run 3.0 works fine ????

Nothing... well, found a faint cw signal on 20 for a few seconds... NOTHING else on any band :(

I also can't hear anything on HS4.0 other than continued repeating CW signals one on 7.010 which repeats VVV De 41HS0 and the other on 10.110 sending VVVde 43HS0 on normal ham radio this would be repeater ID, no other signals heard or showing.

That's correct, the CW on low frequencies on each bands are "beacons" with their ID, not real operators.

Ok, the propagation is not really good last time... and I agree, every time I turn on the radio there are only a couple of operators QRV.
But nevertheless it is possible to make QSOs with this people.
Last time mostly on 17 meters and sometimes on 20 m as well.

Just try it again at different times. :-)

This problem is showing up here.
On the iMac running Hamsphere 4 I get a very bad reception. All bands almost dead.
In the Iphone reception is everywhere. I can hear a nice QSO between US and Australia here in Brazil but on the computer i got nothing.
Please help.

The same problem shows up here. I can here many broadcaster on Hamsphere 3 (40m for example) but not using HamSphere 4?!

Any solution has been recommended by HamSphere to this problem, or mis-configuration? Thank.

Broadcasting in HS 4 is on 48 Meters, not 40 m (or somewhere else).

Boy was I wrong...started actually using the Propagation Program & bands at right times just like the real world. Works a treat.

This should re light my interest in the world of HF radio...Great QSO's all around the Globe. Lew VK5fsdx

I have the same problem on H4. Nothing. No CQs. I haven’t purchased any extras. H3 works and I have been using that.

I am finding the same thing here. There was activity on 40 m when listening on HS 3.1, but when I went to HS 4.0 nothing.

Hi:

I am reading about propagation. I thought this only pertained to actual on the air transmissions. I wonder how this would work simulated. I guess I should read up on that. Some people mentioned about hamsphere being like a chat room. I don't like to think of it that way because it takes the fun out of it. There are a number of hams like myself who at one time had real gear. Equipment was a lot cheaper then. You would string a dipole, long wire, and match it with an antenna tuner. The right match was the best impedance where you would get the most signal out. Of course the transmitter was rated at 100w. Living in apartments all my life, I couldn't have that much power which of course creates TVI. Every ham knows this. I had to resort to QRP and work contacts at late night and early morning. Sometimes, I would have to stay up several hours and hope for a contact. Sometimes it worked but most of the time, it didn't. Stringing antennas with very thin wire was a waste of time as once the winds came up, the antenna broke, It got rather tiring to keep stringing it up. It was called hidden antennas and you had to erect them when no one was looking. Managers and owners took a dim view of that unless they were hams. I haven't found one that was a ham. Yes, I miss the real ham radio equipment but I definitely would settle using HamSphere. I know I can use hs3 because it works. I rather have HS4 though. Thanks for reading.

K6RVD,

Hello Mel! I am in the same boat with the antenna restrictions and have had to resort to HS3 and HS4. Although there are more signals on HS3, I enjoy the the HS4 platform for the challenge of simulated DX. There is usually a nightly ragchew on 40 meters on either 7.040 or 7.065 with operators on the east coast, mid-west, and Canada. They have a lot of good information about the propagational conditions on the HS4 platform. They can usually be heard with the IDC or the Fishbone antennas. Give them a try. I hope to have a QSO with you sometime. I am in SOCAL so we should be able to hook up some night on 40! Take care and 73.

Hi Eric: KG6VQE, I thought I was doing something wrong. Like you and many others, I hear nothing. I only subscribed for three months.
I too am using the default vertical antenna. I may not be renewing my subscription at the end of the three months.

Hello Jeff,

Read through your post and hope you were able to make a contact or two since the post. I noted your call on the DX Cluster last night near 7.065 on the 40 meter band. If you still haven't gotten a contact, I will be on HS4 40 meters tonight and will be calling CQ around 0330 - 0430 UTC.

Hi and thanks to K6RVD Mel

Been ham for many years and struggling with different yagis, wire antennas and verticals but our sun is the fault, cause less sunspots no DX, ok, you have those big antennas and couple 1 kW's so that will work but I built 4 element monobander for 15 m and just 100 W with Kenwood TS 830 I got 270 "countries" with it on 15, you need just a good antenna to have fun Esa/SM2WGV

Hi: de K6RVD replying to some of the comments as I have. For the longest time, I have been struggling with HS4. I really wish I can use it as the transceiver looks like the real thing. It is a shame I am unable to use it due to antenna restrictions. The antenna that is recommended does cost and my pocketbook tells me that it is too much for me. I believe most of the hams here uses the expensive yagi type of antenna. If it was a lower price, I could do it. So, meanwhile, I can still use the HS3 but I will miss out on some DX. Better have something than nothing. :)

The best of 73's and will contact you.

Hi Mel,

Yagis are not the only chance for good results. ;-) I'm using Cardioids for the higher bands. And Dipol, 4-Square and FB-Array for the lower ones. That's enough for most cases.

ERIC - KG6VQE

FROM: MEL- K6RVD

Hi Eric:

I know this is an old message but I was scanning the post and yours made more sense as I feel I am in the same dilemma. I have been a hame since 1954 and got my general in 1960. When I was younger hi hi :) I was quite active fixed and mobile. Built my own and really enjoyed ham life. Over the years, things got hectic for me as I lived in apartments and you know as well as myself, try to hide that you are a ham from everyone unless they are also hams. You can't up wattage to what you want because of you know: TVI, TVI, the mindset of all other residents who have TV's. I tried QRP but extreme low power didn't work well. If you don't have a good ground, then your signal suffers. I tried outdoor, hidden antennas, and indoor as well. Looks weird when you have a slinky going around the ceiling. Not only that, but try to explain it to the landlord who comes knocking at your door and can't keep them. The first thing my landlord did was look inside and saw all these curly cules around the ceiling and the first that comes to his mind is. Explain what is up there. I tried to make excuses but myself hemming and studdering did not help. Wen I had it strung outside, it would usually break because of the wind. The worst part was to stay up hours in the early morning to possible make a contact. I had a nice QRP rig, the Heathkit Hw8 with a SWR attached and if I stayed up long enough, I would make some contact but hardly any DX. I gave up on that because I was tired during the day without much sleep. Now, I live in a rural area where I can put an outside antenna with no problems; however, surrounded by hills, trees and not great reception, it is not worth it. If I were able to put up a good beam, maybe I can get by but it costs and me being almost 80 years, I cant climb beams. There are not that many hames in the small town I live in to help.

So now, I will make use of Hamsphere as it is close to anything to the real thing. Maybe, not exactly but close enough. The hams here are very friendly and always willing to rag chew with you. DX hams are so nice and it is a pleasure talking to them. Anyway, I thought I would write this message so at least I can air my views. I will take your advice on the antennas you recomment. I do have the direction rotator but not a very good antenna. Maybe, we will talk sometime. I am so eager to use HS4 and maybe it will work better for me. Have a good one ERIC.

73's to you and from K6RVD, see you around.

Having the same issue with HS4, I never hear anything but a CW beacon and the instructional signal on 17m. This is NOT what I expect for my money and unless someone can enlighten me (other than saying 'spend more money for antennas' I will have to consider demanding a refund.
