Ham Radio in the Classroom

Hi from Wisconsin,
I am a science teacher in Madison with two 6th grade classes and have been setting up a ham station in my room. We have a Kenwood TS-530S and accessories which I brought from home. Just got the ground wiring done, but putting an antenna up in 20 below wx and my room is on 2nd floor, leads to some challenges. In the meantime I tried Hamsphere and it really is an efficient way and very few wires. However, I have a General Class license and 40 meters and 80 meters doesn't get into my phone band. Am I not doing something correctly? Jim 73 |

Hi Jim.
It is a virtual band so any frequency will do for phone. But for teaching it would be nice to have the appropriate bands. But the bands differ all around the world so... Changing the 40meter band to 7100-7199 would probably be a good idea. But I am not sure about the 80 meter band. I think 3700-3799 is a good choice. Both advanced and extra classes may use that band for phone. 73 Kelly |

Hello Jim
Welcome to Hamsphere. I wish we had Ham Radio in the classroom when I went to school! The kids will love it. If you use Hamsphere for a teaching tool and you plan to have the kids give it a try, please send me a message via PM or email and I'd be happy to chat with your students! I'm sure there are a lot of other Hamsphere users who'd do the same. Take care, Good luck and 73 to you and your students Jerry - N1TKO |

Hi Jim,
I don't have my ticket yet but I'd be willing to QSO with your students. I wish there was ham radio in school when I was in. |
