Almost A Radio Ham' Now Just A Listener

I Guys, what does the heading mean? well aprox 1994 i was 2 weeks away from sitting the full RAE, and lifes little problems stopped me from doing so.
Many years later i have just picked up a little Roberts SW set, 500 -30mhz i think, anyway i was living in Manchester United Kingdom, and i now live in North Wales UK, Prestatyn, on the coast, a lot of things have changed since 1994, a bit like a Photographers changeover to Digital, i believe Radio as changed also, i have no idea what changes, but i will learn and pick it up, i could not go for any big set-up, money is not in abundance, so i think my final aim would perhaps be on 2mtr70cm band, but things have changed, and i will need advice, and how easy is it to get started, maybe a rig that can go from house to car? and of course what course would i need to achieve this, i love Photography, and my second as always been Radio, why? maybe it had something to do with my Father being on Minesweepers and other things they got up to in WWII. I have an illness that is more anoying than anything, i have Chronic Neuropathic Pain Syndrome? lol Pacemaker, so i do not work anymore, at 54 i'm retired due to mainly 24hr pain, which can somedays be moderate say 5 out of 10, butthen theres days or nights it could be an Eartquake 10, and when that happens im on my Bed, prob radio in the background, so it is theraputic afterall. anyway guys, i don't even know if this is English or American? you will let me know i'm sure, i love picking up knowledge and learning. speak soon guys

Hi - For what its worth I was similar to you. I took the RAE in 1994 but failed one of the papers. I remained a SWL like yourself and dabled a bit with CB in between. I then got pointed in the right direction to study for the Foundation licence which I duly passed. Im now so glad I did take it, and yes, Amateur Radio has moved on alot and the Foundation Licence is well within the realms of most people I would say. If you join a local group it may even be free tuition like I had. Thats all well and good if you want to try and get in to 2m and 70cm etc - but if you want the Amateur experience, without the nerves of a test, then Kelly Lindman has designed the perfect tool in HAMSPHERE !! I love it too and I have access to all the real world bands too. There are some great people here and very willing to help, dont be afraid to ask.

I wish you good luck and hope that you join this community as I have and start to enjoy the wonderful pastime of VAR (Virtual Amateur Radio).
Im here if you need help too -
