MARKET REEF, OJ0B WILL SOON HIT THE HAMSPHERE.

This coming Saturday, September 20, a party of Juha, OH9MM and Martti, OH2BH will attempt a landing on Market Reef to put OJ0AM on the air for one week on all bands. A permanent beam is in place to boost their signals. But not only will they operate on regular amateur radio bands; they also plan to proceed with an experiment of real and virtual Amateur Radio (Hamsphere) coexisting by conducting a first-ever activity from Market in Virtual Reality. The plan is to be on both HS 3.0 and 4.0 with the aim to provide virtual community their first QSO with Market Reef. Please note that the landing on the rocks is difficult and installing the satellite disc assumes good weather thus allow the team all the time it take to become operational.

As Market Reef is outside of regular cell phone and terrestrial internet coverage, the team has made an arrangement with Eutelsat Ka-Sat to secure OJ0B with a satellite broadband link. They tested the link from mainland Finland and a downlink speed of 18Mbit/s and uplink of 6Mbit/s was verified. A latency of some 800 ms was experienced, posing a challenge for operators at both ends of the satellite circuit. To avoid any potential problem with the latency, OJ0B will call assistance from Marcin, 161HS363 and consider an option to use "list operation" if necessary. Please be advised to operate precisely and consider long delay between the transmissions.

This is a classic example of current internet technology and its role in presenting attractive opportunities for young people who would like to approach the Amateur Radio community through today’s technology while honoring the traditional concepts and values of Amateur Radio and ultimately becoming part of it.

Best regards
