Secrets to Sounding GREAT on HamSphere

This is a great blog post from KB4T - Frank. This is well worth reading and perhaps showing you tips to sound better on HamSphere!

Most HamSphere users sound awful on the system. Most aren’t even aware they sound bad on the system. It’s not easy to hear yourself and few operators are willing to give someone an honest report on their audio quality for fear it would be offensive to do so. The Echo Server at 1.82345 offers too short a playback to get a good idea what you really sound like. So what to do???

Some people think engaging the compressor built-in to the HamSphere software will make them sound better. This is usually wrong. The compressor does nothing to improve tonal quality. In fact, the compressor tends to exaggerate the worst qualities of an audio signal. Generally speaking, I DO NOT recommend using the compressor built-in to the HamSphere (HS) software. In most cases it adds no value. Worse, most people have no idea how to use it and have no way of hearing what changes the compressor makes in their audio.

When it comes to HamSphere transmit audio, LESS is MORE. The most important thing is to learn good MICROPHONE TECHNIQUE. Most people make their microphones too sensitive, talk to close or too far away from their microphones and don’t set their MIC LEVEL correctly.

Most people don’t pay enough attention to the acoustics of the room from which they operate. In too many cases, the sound of their voice bounces off nearby walls or objects and creates echos or an annoying hollow sound quality to their audio. All of these things are easily correctable…without the use of the compressor. In most cases, the fix is SIMPLE: lower the sensitivity of the microphone!!!

I recommend NOT using the compressor at all. Take the time to figure out how to make your computer’s microphone setup sound the best it can outside of HS. Use the sound recording software built-in to your computer’s operating system (or one of many free sound recording programs available for download on the internet) to make test recordings of your setup.

Adjust the microphone settings in your computer’s sound-related screens so your microphone sensitivity is only high enough to adequately pick up your voice with the best quality. Figure out how far away you need to be from your microphone to sound clear without any background noise. This will require several experimental recordings. Practice making recordings of yourself speaking at various distances at a comfortable voice level. Playbacks will reveal what sounds best.

If you aren’t able to get a good sound from whatever microphone you are using, buy something different or better. Headsets with boom mikes tend to be the best choice for most HS operators.

Once you are able to make a recording of yourself and the playback sounds clean and clear, start up HS and adjust the MIC LEVEL so the needle kicks up to the top of the green bar on the bottom scale of the HS transceiver meter. Avoid going past the green bar. Remember: LESS is MORE.

If you hear someone who sounds especially good to you on HS, contact them and ask them detailed questions about their setup. You will find that most people who sound very good on HS are using boom mikes with their microphone sensitivity set properly, their MIC LEVEL set to avoid going past the green bar on the HS meter and the room they are in produces no echoes or reverberations.

Avoid using the compressor. It usually just adds distortion. The compressor usually makes bad audio sound worse. The compressor’s purpose in life is to produce an even level of audio despite the many changes in level that actually exist in the audio. The compressor DOES NOTHING to improve the TONAL QUALITY of a signal. The compressor is all about LEVEL not tonal quality.

The objective is to sound clean and clear as well as loud. Achieving that goal takes experimentation and effort. The results are worth the time required.

PILE UP in the real Shortwave world

Dear Operators.

For some inexperienced users, pile-ups on HamSphere can be really intimidating, tedious and difficult. A pile-up is when many stations are calling for one rare DX-station for example. Training Pile-up operation will make operators more skilled in DX-ing.

On the real shortwave band, the noise and doubling is extreme when there is a real PILE-UP. I would like to give you some idea what it sounds like.

Watch this recorded Pile-Up with V31MW on 15 meter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUam0Y-hnnU

Then you will get some perspective on how much doubling and QRM there is in a real pile-up :-)

One method to avoid doubling is to run split frequency. Like listening for calls on a higher frequency.

See this Pile Up with S9DX http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooyXufdgXiI where he uses dual VFO to receive on a higher frequency.

Good DX

HamSphere Fox Hunt 30 March - 7 April

We are proud to present a brand new activity on HamSphere which we call the HamSphere Fox hunt.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this rather special contest that will be carried out for a little over a week.

The Amateur Radio term "foxhunting" refers to another kind of Radio Direction Finding (RDF) contest, done completely on foot in large woods and parks. It's a map-and-compass sport similar to orienteering, with about a half-dozen "fox" transmitters to find in a period of two hours or so. Someday this sport, which is also called foxtailing, fox-teering and radio-orienteering, may become an Olympic event. Meanwhile, it's a fun-filled activity for your hamfests and Scout Jamborees.

On HamSphere we can't do direction finding, but we can hide transmitters.
The fox hunting is not about Morse Code really. You can just count the dots in the last character of the ID.

We have hidden 5 Ham Radio fox transmitters on all bands of HamSphere except BC.
Foxes are ID:ed MOE, MOI, MOS, MOH and MO5. They all transmit with slow morse code with 100 milliwatts so can be difficult to spot if propagation is low. This particular hunt will be carried out until Sunday 7th of April 2013 23.59 UTC and the objective is to log as many foxes as possible.

To ID the Foxes, for example MOE will transmit Dah,Dah followed by Dah, Dah, Dah followed by Dit

Please log UTC, QRG and Fox-ID in your log books. The Fox transmitters are moving around and use different frequencies and bands. There is a 1.5 sec carrier wave before ID to make it easire to spot them.

Winners will be rewarded free subscriptions and other goodies.

The Hunt is on !!!

You can listen to a fox demo transmitter on 6210 kHz, Stockholm server #6. It transmits with 0.1 Watts every 15 seconds.

Doubling and DX “Pile up” traffic

“Doubling”

Doubling occurs when two stations using a two-way radio start talking at the same time and on the same frequency. This usually happens due to the confusion on how to use the Amateur Radio protocol.

A licensed Amateur Radio operator is taught the protocol prior to getting licensed, but as we also allow non licensed users, so called “Radio Enthusiast”, who may have less experience in two-way communications, the “doubling” has increased.

To reduce this phenomenon on HamSphere, as well as creating a better and smoother communication platform, we suggest that the Amateur Radio protocol should be used and it is in fact a very simple, but yet effective method of handing over the microphone to the next user:

At the end of each over (transmission) you say: “the call sign of the user who will speak next“ followed by “this is” and “your callsign” and “over”. That’s it!

Of course, if you make just quick transmissions, you can just end the transmission with “over”, but it is then extremely important that you use just that phrase. I also sometimes use the phrase “go ahead” to end my transmissions. The important thing is that there is no doubt of when your transmission is over and no doubt of whom you leaving the microphone to.

Doubling and DX “Pile up” traffic

For DX operation, when there is a rare station on HamSphere.
Here are some simple pointers:

• Keep it short. Name, QTH and Signal report only. Do not start talking about the weather and wind or other irrelevant things. Many people in line for QSO.
• When a DX addresses a station, DO NOT interrupt until they have at least exchanged Name, QTH and signal reports
• Call only using the two last digits of your callsign such as “Hotel Charlie” if your callsign were SM7NHC
• If HS user, just call using your suffix. Like 101, if your callsign is 110HS101

Some DX stations are used to work “pile ups”. They know how to handle the situation and they can control the calling stations. But as we have many beginners on the band, it can be difficult to get through a “pile up”.

On shortwave there are sometimes self appointed channel masters who distribute the “pile-up” calls to the DX in an orderly fashion. We have seen some activity like that on HamSphere already. So if you have DX Pileup experience, perhaps you can take over and instate yourself as a DX master who distribute and takes the calls in an orderly fashion.

The Amateur's Code

The Radio Amateur is:

CONSIDERATE never knowingly operating in such a way as to lessen the pleasure of others.

LOYAL offering loyalty, encouragement and support to other amateurs, local clubs and the American Radio Relay League, through which Amateur Radio in the United States is represented nationally and internationally.

PROGRESSIVE with knowledge abreast of science, a well built and efficient station, and operation beyond reproach.

FRIENDLY with slow and patient operation when requested, friendly advice and counsel to the beginner, kindly assistance, co-operation and consideration for the interests of others. These are the hallmarks of the amateur spirit.

BALANCED Radio is an avocation, never interfering with duties owed to family, job, school or community.

PATRIOTIC with station and skill always ready for service to country and community

The true Ham Radio spirit

* Always be polite regardless of the circumstances. If not, avoid transmitting.
* Set a good example especially for short wave listeners who may be thinking about becoming a ham.
* Be a good listener. It will help you better organize your thoughts before transmitting.
* Please refrain from breaking into an ongoing QSO unless you have something to share with the group.
* Break a QSO between overs by sending your call sign.
* Reply to a CQ, or call CQ yourself. It helps keep alive the magic of ham radio.
* Speak clearly and slowly, especially when giving your call sign to someone you have never worked before.
* Promote friendship and goodwill to DX contacts. Look for ways to get to know each other rather than simply exchanging signal reports and 73s!
* Try to keep track of everyone in the QSO. Hopefully someone has assumed the role of "traffic director" to make sure everyone has a chance to contribute to the discussion. If not, don't hesitate to .
* Make it clear at the end of each transmission which station is expected to transmit next.
* Operate on frequencies that are in whole KHz (e.g. 7.065 Khz). This alleviates ambiguity and makes it easier for everyone to be on the same frequency.
* Do not transmit before first determining that the frequency is clear.
* Try to keep a separation of at least 10 kHz.

Hamsphere DX Country Advisory

Dear Operator.

If you are a DX-Hunter you may recently have seen a discrepancy in your log and DXHC award numbers.

The reason for the changed data is that we have unfolded a DX-Scam on a limited scale. Nine accounts created with IP numbers inside DX countries, have managed to trick our system and the perpetrator(s) managed to "impersonate" nine different personalities from nine different countries. Our rigid security system alerted us and we have been doing an investigation to track down the individual(s)

The transmissions have all orginated from Moscow, Russia and one or possibly a few operators have deliberately purchased subscriptions to overcome some of our built in security-mechanisms. We regret that some operators have attempted to operate in this fraudulent way.

The fake and impersonated accounts are:

162hs107
85HS111
ZA1FK
223hs100
220hs106 (RE-ISSUED to Legit DX-User from SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES)
175HS100
86HS126
5Z4JX
156HS105

All accounts have been deleted including log entries and QSL cards.
We have installed a new blocking mechanism so that DX-Callsigns cannot be used in any other country than origin even if a subscription is purchased. We have also gone through the database and we do not find any other anomalies than those above.

HamSphere has an advantage over real Ham radio and that is the ability to pinpoint the exact country of origin by using IP numbers.

I trust that you as an operator of HamSphere feel that we do everything we can to present legit and real countries for you to QSO.

Kind regards

The International DX Contest starts at 00:00 Saturday 23 Feb.

You should keep your power level at max 1500 watts = knob setting 9 (See below table). But please try to use as little power as possible to avoid splatter. Only increase your power when band conditions are bad.

The transceiver power setting is between 0-11.
Here is a power Setting - Watt translation table.

0 = 1 Watt
2 = 10 watts
3 = 30 watts
4 = 50 watts
6 = 100 watts
7 = 300 watts
8 = 800 watts
9 = 1500 watts
11 = 2500 watts

The transceiver carrier wave signal injection into the Sphere is simulated using logarithmic functions. This means that the signal propagation is very realistic and comparable with a real shortwave transmitter. Hence using setting 11 constantly will make your signal splatter.
Use the power setting with common sense.

Dear Operators.

As the HamSphere community is growing rapidly we have seen a need for a server upgrade. The HamSphere system requires a lot of CPU power and we currently have 28 CPU cores running on 4 servers.

The London and Chicago servers have been replaced by two new servers in Strasbourg France and St. Louis, Missouri USA.
These new additions are each 4 times more more powerful than the previous servers.

DX Cluster Update

Dear Operators

We have today updated the HamSphere DX Cluster and made it conform to International Cluster standards.
The DX Cluster is as from today showing real time transmission spots, just like real shortwave DX Clusters.

NOTE! You must make a call or use the transmitter in order to show in the cluster. So pick a frequency and start calling CQ. Your callsign will immediately be seen in the cluster with a timestamp and frequency/band.

To get the logged on users for the active band you can use the F12 key as usual. If you want to see ALL users logged on, just type the command /USERS ALL. To get the current logged on number of users, use the F11 key as usual.

This Cluster update will make it easier to find activity on the HamSphere bands and the cluster will be kept a lot more consistent.
