Howdy, Folks,

I just posted an experimental audio CW keyboard program, tailored for use with Hamsphere.

I've written it with XP-era tools, and it runs well on my XP system. However, since I'm using some Windows low-level calls that I haven't used in my other freeware, I have no idea how the program will run on other versions of Windows. I'm not even sure it will run on other XP systems. :)

(My other freeware seems to work pretty well with all versions between Win98 and Vista 32, so you never know. You might get lucky. If you're running Windows 7, try setting the program for XP compatibility right out of the box.)

The program is very basic. At this point, it's just a keyboard that generates a variable level and frequency audio tone. The user interface is modeled after the very nice one used by CWType. The program includes macro support, similar to CWType's. At this point, it doesn't have an interface for a straight key or paddle. If this experimental version of the program works well on the majority of the PCs out there, I'll consider adding that feature to a future version.

You can find the program on my personal page:

http://www.mindspring.com/~tom2000/CWKbd/CWKbd.html

I'll be interested in learning how it works for you, and particularly what problems you enounter with it.

Enjoy!

Very 73,

Tom

Joe, you just knocked me right out of my desk chair. I've had a number of reports that my other freeware has problems on Vista 64. I have absolutely no idea why the keyboard program works for you. That's the last operating system where I would have expected success.

Many, many thanks for your report! Yes, definitely, I'll look for you on the air.

Happy New Year!

Tom

Tom, I just had first QSO with Audio CW Keyboard tonight. Using my home XP machine. It worked out pretty good. The only suggestion that I have is that it would be nice if the text you type was sent immediately without hitting enter. That made it a bit awkward. Maybe I'm missing something? I love the macros ! I will keep using it. Thanks again. -Joe

It would also be nice if HS had some sort of QSK or VOX feature like CQ100. I guess I'll get used to it after a while.

Hey Tom
Something tells me when I find the answer to this question I'm going to feel like a dope!! hi hi
I downloaded the program but don't quite understand how to get it to transfer the text to Hamsphere for Xmit...?
Do you send it out over the mic?
(It said mute your mic so that can't be correct)
I initiate the DSB, type my text and hit enter, it sends CW but not over HS...?

I am obviously missing something. Any help?
Thanks

Hi, Joe,

Yes, the program could probably be set up to send
immediately. I'll noodle around with it and see if
what I can do.

Thanks & 73,

Tom

Hi, Jerry,

I'm guessing you followed the directions on my web page, and still can't get the keyboard to develop any transmit audio. If that's the case, maybe your sound card driver uses a different channel than the one installed in my computer.

Try opening your Windows volume control window. From the Options menu, select Properties, then select the Recording controls. Activate your Stereo Mix channel and run up the gain about halfway.

Then go back to Hamsphere and the CW keyboard. Set Hamsphere's mic gain for 2 or three, and set the keyboard's level control to 20 or 25 percent. Activate the PTT button and try sending some CW.

If that doesn't work, I'll look for you on the air. Maybe, working together, we can solve the problem.

Good luck!

Thanks and 73,

Tom

Hi Tom, I'm looking forward to my first CW QSO, I hope it is with you and thanks to you I am interested in the CW and QRP.

My reception is very awkward and very slow speed but I'm training my ear even more. And I'm adapting my Ariston vertical key for manual transmissions (I have always loved hand pass).

With regard to hardware, I am seriously interested in buying a laptop 1 wy qrp portable antenna to take the field. I've got the license official EA5! I passed the exam successfully. Soon will I get my official callsign

Thanks for everything
Sergio 30HS142

What is certain is that I have loved the CW.

I will look for you. I am often on Hamsphere around
1700 UTC, when I'm having my morning coffee and
trying to get my eyes open. :)

No problem. I'm happy to QRS as slow as you need
me to.

Congratulations, Sergio. That's great news, and a wonderful accomplishment! I hope that you will have as much fun with ham radio as I have had over the years.

After all these years, and after trying many of the different modes and activities that ham radio makes possible, CW is still my favorite mode, and always will be! I'm happy that you feel the same.

Thanks again, Sergio, and Happy New Year!

Very 73,

Tom

Thanks Tom
I'll try that in just a bit. The CW that comes out of the program is just great! Very smooth and clear. I'll try getting it set up this afternoon and will let you know how I progress.
Thanks again
