December 2019 Newsletter Welcome to the Christmas edition of the HamSphere Newsletter 2019. We have a lot of good stuff coming your way so here we go: 12 Years on line Hi everyone. On 25 Dec 2019 we have been online for 12 years. The first server version was dated 25 Dec 2007. HamSphere is the result of 50 years of communication radio experience. In 1970 my parents gave me a CB radio and I was hooked. Ten years later I managed to get my Amateur Radio license and have experimented with radio transmitters and receivers ever since. When you start your HamSphere 4.0 transceiver you will feel that it is something different than any other VOIP communication program. It will instantly take you back to the times when Ham Radio flourished with big antennas and home brew rigs and it really sounds and feels like the real thing. HamSphere is about the passion of Amateur Radio communication and all its concepts such as CQ, QSL cards, Call signs, propagation, antennas etc but also a touch of the "cold war" era where shortwave radio peaked around the world with number stations, jamming, propaganda etc. It is first when you take a look under the hood you will understand how similar a real Ham Radio transceiver it really is. HamSphere is built just like a real transceiver with balanced mixers, side band filters, amplifiers, detectors using SDR (Software Defined Radio) technology. But the coolest part is the propagation model. HamSphere 4.0 "bounces" its signals off a virtual ionosphere in constant motion. It was a real difficult and tricky RDF contest and the teams worked hard to pinpoint those elusive beacons. We congratulate the Alpha team that managed to pinpoint the beacons with the score of 6151 points and won this contest. This is the first time Alpha team have it. Also team Epsilon did a really good result as a runner up with the score of 4130. Team Omega managed to get 1917 points which is better than last time when the scored 1538 points, well done indeed! HamSphere 4.0 Mobile More and more users download the HamSphere 4.0 mobile app and start hunting awards. There are almost 500 mobile award hunters active on the system and we have three exclusive awards for the mobile platform. Due to some technical issues with the audio codecs, the linking project has been delayed with a few weeks. We are working on a solution where we will merge both HS3 and HS4 on the 6m band. The biggest issue has been how to correctly handle the Codec/Non codec modes between the systems. But we will make it work. DXpedition Reports and Special Event Stations By Wayne 9HS4755 Anyone wishing to go on a DXPedition there is a PDF form to be filled out (French or English) These forms can be found at on the HamSphere 4 Facebook page, click on “Files”. Advertising for these DXPeditions, going forward, will be on the HamSphere website Forum and on the news ticker. There will be some information given on the HamSphere 4 and LNDX Facebook pages. It is requested that when making application for a DXPedition that a minimum of 14 days in advance of the start of the expedition is recommended. There is an average of 4 to 6 hours work setting up each DXPedition. This includes: checking that the details on the application form are correct; entering the information in to the HamSphere Database; making QSL Cards (3 for a weekend DXP and 4 or more for longer DXP) setting up the rig and communicating with the Operator conducting the DXP and having him or her check all the cards and information. By Basu, VU2NSB Too often we hear amateur radio operators complain about HF bands being dead during the low ebb of a solar cycle that causes low SSN... Really? Who says the bands are dead? Think again… Let us do a reality check. At the time of writing this post, it is November 28, 2019. We are passing through the cusp between the solar cycle #24 and #25. The solar activity is at its rock bottom. The ionization density of the ionosphere is at a dismal low. Does it make HF radio propagation a challenge? Yes, it does… But it does not mean that the bands are dead?… Not Really. What really happens during the low SSN conditions is that HF band propagation openings that used to happen frequently are now less frequent. The duration of these openings to a particular DX destination becomes shorter. The strength of band openings become shallower. However, none of these means that the bands are dead or there is no propagation. All it means is that now HF DXing requires more perseverance and greater skills. The amateur radio operator can no more take radio propagation for granted as we often do while the going is good. Unlike the usual, so-called, good propagation scenario during higher SSN conditions, now the operators need to apply their minds to leverage the whims and fancies of mother nature. Where do we usually go wrong? Choosing the correct band and the correct time for trying to work into a particular DX region is the key to success. For this, it is important to understand the finer points of propagation behavior that many of us take for granted and do not spend enough time trying to figure it out. We need to understand various propagation phenomena that play up during low SSN conditions. First and foremost, since the ionospheric density is lower, the Skywave skip propagation no more happens at moderate or high takeoff angles. We need to have our antennas work efficiently at lower takeoff angles. Low angle radiations will produce a skip while higher angles will penetrate the ionosphere. We also need to leverage phenomena like trans-equatorial propagation (TEP), etc which are prevalent. We often discount the higher frequency bands like 15-12-10m and spend more time looking for activity on the lower frequency bands… Don’t do it. We might be missing out on some of the exotic DX. Most importantly, we need to know the best region in the world to target from our respective QTH. The Mantra to success and Happy DXing during Low SSN * Give up your normal operating habits and work on fresh action plans. * If you live in the northern hemisphere then don’t waste too much time looking for East-West DX propagation openings. * North-South (across the equator) paths will yield great success for operators living above the equator. * Due to the sun’s sub-solar path, at this time of the season, being around -20° Latitude or lower, operators in the south are blessed with great openings provided they choose the proper band. * Leverage the elevated ionization density of the ionosphere around the equatorial region (formed due to equatorial electrojet) and try to focus on the 15-17-12m bands. * The 20m and 10m too may yield good results from time-to-time. * A good antenna does not necessarily mean a higher gain antenna. The important factor is the radiation takeoff angle. * Lower the radiation takeoff angle of your antenna, the better will be the DX prospects. * Raise your antenna as high as possible above the ground with adequate clearance from metallic structures. * A moderate gain, light-weight antenna at a greater height above the ground is far more effective than a higher gain antenna at a lower height. * Deploying antennas at a good height above ground also need good transmission line systems. * Under the current propagation conditions, normally, the optimum required takeoff angle is between 8-14° for the upper HF DX bands. For the Summer period we met on 2 Meters only (145.300) due to the increased noise on the 40 meter band. On October 2nd we moved back to the practice of having Check In and Contacts on 40 Meters at 07.030 and then moving to 2 Meters (145.300) for the round table or discussion section. Here are some comments from Branko YU4DX: We see 8-FSK modulation, aka FT8 as well as other slower digital modes JT9, JT65. Proper software defining of possible codecs needed or else inside HS4 in order to integrate WSJT and use of its digital protocols onto HS4 platform. I guess if allowed and involved likewise, at small band portions, or at suggested frequencies in range of up to 5 Khz, or even less, I believe and hope it would revolve and evolve 2-ways during and while poor band condx but of course could encourage and populate more of a lower band's activities (160, 80, 60, even 40 and 30m). Occupies small bandwidth of 47Hz, TX duration doesn't exceed 14 sec, multi-times faster completion of a QSO, decoding thresholds approx -20dB and even more.. Extra advantage - OPs will get in familiar with WSJT QSO protocols; furthermore, Weak Signal Communication decoding sys will be a must to if/when VHF/UHF will be applied onto HS4.. Personally, I could not imagine fully operational HAM OP without K1JT's WSJT softW, in a sense of its necessity.. GL! Hope its implementation and use is HS4 programmable .. 73s Branco From Michael Recagno ZB3M we get this info: PSK31 an SSTV which are the two most used, I dont think FT8 is gonna work on HS4 due to latency times on some countries. :( but maybe a Hamsphere version of WSJT-X could work. :) As for tips please keep mic levels at minimum, The volume slider plugin is very useful as it indicates the volume level in digit, this in combination with the S-Meter plus helps a lot in maintaining good audio levels. When you go to install FliDigi it will ask you if you like to install Flac, say no or simply uncheck the box during installation, only if you plan to use FliDigi for HamSphere. Blankenberge is a Belgian coastal town with a long beach and promenade, plus a busy marina. The Belgium Pier stretches out into the North Sea, offering views of the seafront. The town is known for its art nouveau architecture. The Belle Epoque Center, in several restored seaside villas, explores the area’s history from 1870 to 1914. Nearby is the Old Town Hall, built in Flemish-Renaissance style in the 17th century.
